Are you a whisky enthusiast? Then you have probably wondered how to enjoy your whisky chilled without gradually diluting it with melting ice. Stainless steel ice cubes offer a practical alternative. Elegant, reusable and designed to cool your drink without adding water, they have become a popular accessory for whisky tasting. To get the best from them, however, it is important to use and care for them properly. Here is our complete guide, including tips for the stainless steel cubes included in our whisky kits.
Why choose stainless steel ice cubes?
Stainless steel ice cubes do not melt and can be used again and again. This means your whisky is not diluted with water, helping it retain its original flavour profile. Their simple, elegant design also adds a refined touch to your tasting experience.

How to use stainless steel ice cubes
Using stainless steel ice cubes is simple and can make your tasting experience even more enjoyable. Louise & Gaston explains how to use them properly.
-
Chill them in the freezer
Before use, place the stainless steel cubes in the freezer for at least 4 hours. For convenience, you can also leave them in overnight. Many models contain a cooling element inside that stores the cold and gradually transfers it to the drink.
-
Place them in the glass carefully
Once chilled, remove the cubes from the freezer with tongs if possible. Add 2 to 3 cubes to your glass, depending on the amount of whisky and how cold you want it. Leave them in the drink for a few minutes before tasting.
Important: stainless steel cubes are extremely hard. Do not chew or bite them, as this could damage your teeth or cause an injury.
How to clean and care for stainless steel ice cubes
Reusable stainless steel ice cubes are easy to maintain, but regular cleaning is important to keep them hygienic and prevent unwanted flavours or residues.
-
Clean after every use
After each use, wash your stainless steel cubes with warm water and a small amount of mild washing-up liquid. Rinse them thoroughly with clean water, then dry them completely with a clean cloth before storing them.
-
Give them a deeper clean when needed
If you use your stainless steel cubes frequently or notice any odours or residue, give them a more thorough clean:
-
Wash them carefully with warm water and mild washing-up liquid.
-
Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
-
Dry them completely before putting them away.
Important: always follow the manufacturer’s care instructions, particularly if the cubes contain an internal cooling gel or liquid. Avoid storing them while damp.
How long do stainless steel ice cubes keep a drink cold?
The cooling time of stainless steel ice cubes depends on several factors, including their size and construction, the starting temperature of the drink, the glass and the room temperature. Unlike ordinary ice, however, they do not melt and therefore do not dilute your whisky.
To get the best cooling effect:
-
Serve your whisky in a pre-chilled glass.
-
Use tongs to handle the cubes when possible rather than warming them in your hands.
Because they can be reused many times, stainless steel ice cubes are a durable alternative to traditional ice cubes. For more tasting advice, explore our guide on how to drink whisky.
Important precautions
Stainless steel ice cubes are straightforward to use, but their weight and hardness mean they should still be handled with care:
-
Never put them in the microwave. Metal should not be placed in a microwave oven.
-
Keep them away from young children. The cubes are not toys and their small size may present a safety risk.
-
Store them in their case or pouch to keep them clean and protect them from unnecessary scratches or knocks.
-
Stop using a cube if it becomes damaged, leaks or is noticeably deformed.
